Schmitz Scores 43, Passes 1,000 as Bolts Win – Wednesday Sports Update

High School
In hockey last night, Houghton scored three goals in the first period, and cruised past Jeffers 5-1. Dawson McKay scored twice for the Gremlins. Carl Olson’s power-play goal was the Jets’ only score. The Gremlins finish the regular season at 15-10. The Jets close their campaign at 11-11-1. Listen for complete coverage of all our local teams in the state tournament beginning Monday. Our final regular-season hockey broadcast will take place tomorrow night, as Calumet entertains Marquette. Our broadcast will begin around 6:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

In boys basketball last night…
– Lake Linden-Hubbell got past Houghton at 65-61. Connor Baccus scored 21 for the Lakes.
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City defeated Hancock 66-57. Devin Schmitz scored 43 points for the Blue Bolts, and passed the 1,000-point mark for his career.
– Chassell overpowered Baraga 75-32.
– L’Anse fell to Ontonagon 50-38.
– Ewen-Trout Creek downed Watersmeet 72-54. Jake Witt scored 30 and grabbed 15 rebounds.

There’s one girls game tonight. Baraga visits Republic-Michigamme to make up a contest that was snowed out on January 10th.

Congratulations to the members of the Houghton swim team who have been named to the All-U.P. squad. Swimmers Josie Ledgerwood, Tessa Meyer, Samantha Olsen from the girls team were honored. On the boys side, swimmers Peter Jasczcak and Leo Wheeler made the team, along with divers Sal Sharp and Andrew Garland. Houghton’s Erik Johnson was named Coach of the Year.

GLHL
The Calumet Wolverines edged the Portage Lake Pioneers 4-3 last night at the Calumet Hockey Week game. Josh Harju’s short-handed goal in the third period was the game-winner. It was his second goal of the night. Issac Bjorn also scored twice for the Wolverines. Charlie Turner had two goals for the Pioneers. Hockey week activities continue with slow puck league play tonight. Ticket to the spaghetti dinner on Saturday are available in advance from any Calumet Hockey Association parent. You can also buy them at the door at the Colosseum Saturday between 3:00 and 7:00.

Zetterburg

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings lost 3-1 to the New York Islanders last night. Petr Mrazek made 24 saves in the loss, and Henrik Zetterberg scored Detroit’s only goal. The Wings have a week off, and return to action next Tuesday at Vancouver. Faceoff is at 10:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons return from the All-Star break tomorrow night at home against the Charlotte Hornets. Tip-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Sasquatch
Stretch your legs and keep an eye open for strange creatures at the fourth annual Snowshoeing with Sasquatch event Saturday at the L’Anse Township Park. Hike the two-mile trail with or without snowshoes. There is no charge, but non-perishable food donations will be accepted to assist the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry. Refreshments will be served.
