Sign partially dismantled on Sharon Avenue

A new business advertisement may have been too hot for a prime location on Sharon Avenue. The Fire Station Cannabis Company has partially dismantled a large sign near the intersection of Sharon and Ridge Road. Houghton City Manager Eric Waara says it isn’t gone for good yet.

Waara says he has been working closely with the city’s attorney regarding the dispute and believes that the ordinance is clear pertaining to business advertisements in that area. What has begun in good faith may be just the first step to a complete tear down, frame and all.

The first matter that needs to be hammered out is who owns the land parcel the sign was placed on. Houghton officials believe it is city property. Even if it is proven to be privately owned, Waara doesn’t believe the original design withstands legal scrutiny. It is not the content of the advertisement causing the dispute.

The sign was put up in early November.
