Softball Wins for Auto Pro, Douglass and Bruin-Slot – Thursday Sports Wrap

Zimmerman

MLB
Jordan Zimmermann turned in his best performance of the season last night, but the Detroit Tigers lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks 2-1. Zimmermann gave up both Arizona runs on four hits in the first inning. He then retired 20 of the final 21 batters he faced, as he pitched through the eighth. Detroit’s only score came in the third, when Alex Avila singled home Ian Kinsler.

Thames

The Tigers host the Rays again tonight. Justin Verlander will start against Alex Cobb. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:45 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Milwaukee Brewers outlasted the St. Louis Cardinals 7-6 last night. Eric Thames’ homer helped put the Crew up 6-0 after the top of the second. The Cards responded with four in the bottom of the second. Hernán Pérez singled home the eventual winning run in the seventh. St. Louis made it close with a two-run homer off Jacob Barnes in the eighth.

Feliz

The Brewers play at St. Louis again tonight. Zach Davies will pitch against Michael Wacha.

Neftalí Feliz opened the season as Milwaukee’s closer, with a contract worth more than five-million dollars. After a demotion, and continued struggles, the team designated him for assignment yesterday. Reliever Rob Scahill was similarly designated on Tuesday. For now, rookie Josh Hader and journeyman Paolo Espino will fill those bullpen slots.

Fast Pitch Softball
In Copper Country Women’s Fast Pitch Softball League action last night…
– Auto Pro Glass and Tire defeated Calumet Golf Club/The Loading Zone 11-5. Morgan Peters was the winning pitcher.
– Frank A. Douglass Agency downed Northern Michigan Land Brokers 15-9. Josie Connors was the winning pitcher and Hannah Hill took the loss. Kirsten Berg had two singles for Northern Michigan Land Brokers. Sofie Kyllonen and had two doubles for Frank A. Douglass Agency and Andra Campbell and Cassidy Becia each had two singles.
– Jan Bruin-Slot Builders outscored Mattila Rock and Dock 14-3. Kayley King was the winning pitcher and Mel Baker took the loss. Mattila Rock and Dock got off to a quick start with two runs in the top of the first inning, but Jan Bruin-Slot Builders responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first, and controlled the rest of the game.

Twilight League
In Copper Country Twilight League baseball play tonight…
– Dean Kangas-State Farm takes on Wolverine-Orbit at the Wolverine field at 6:30.
– Superior National Bank-Stanton plays REL-Mohawk Technologies in a doubleheader beginning at 5:30 at the Stanton field.

NMU
The ice rink at Northern Michigan University’s Berry Events Center will now officially be known as “Rick Comley Rink.” Comley coached the Wildcats for 26 seasons, and led them to the 1991 NCAA championship. The designation was announced yesterday. It will be made official at Northern’s October 7th game against Lake Superior State, where Comley played college hockey, and began his coaching career.
