Superior Watershed Partnership and the Michigan Natural Resource Trust Fund Assist Baraga County in Purchase of the Sturgeon River Scenic Park

Baraga County completes a 2 million dollar acquisition purchasing 1100 acres of forest and 4 million of the Sturgeon River. The Superior Watershed Partnership Land Conservancy, in cooperation with Baraga County, recently announced the purchase and protection of 1,184 acres for the Sturgeon River Scenic Park.

The county completed the 2 million dollar purchase with support from the Superior Watershed Partnership and funding from the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund. Superior Watershed partnership and the Great Lakes Climate Corps will work with Baraga County and Local partners to plan several miles of hiking trails, kayak launches, and environmental education kiosks. The new public recreational site will provide numerous environmental and economic benefits while supporting the Baraga County Recreation Plan. The project will also support the state’s Health Climate Plan targets of protecting thirty percent of Michigan’s lands and water by 2030.

The acquisition’s lands are home to various animal species, and flora specimens listed as threatened, endangered, or of special concern. The purchase will also protect water resources by maintaining the integrity of streams creeks, and drainage in the Sturgeon River watershed.
