Team CC Earns Second Straight Shutout – Saturday Sports Wrap

Team CC
Team Copper Country earned its second straight shutout in pool play at the national tournament in Lansing yesterday, skating to a 4-0 victory over the Warwick Wildcats from Warwick, Pennsylvania. After a scoreless first period, Ted Randell scored the game-winner on a power play in the second. He went on to complete a hat trick with two more tallies in the third period. Brent Loukus added an insurance goal. Jed Pietila had two assists. Dawson MccKay got the win in net, as Team CC outshot Warwick 47-14. Team CC opened the tournament with a 4-0 victory over Hamden, Connecticut, on Thursday. The victory guarantees Team CC a berth in the quarterfinals tomorrow. They will fight for better position in their final pool game today against the Foothills Flyers from Littleton, Colorado. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:45 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

The Finlandia University baseball team plays doubleheaders at the University of Chicago today and tomorrow.

NCAA
Minnesota-Duluth and Denver will meet in the championship game of the NCAA Division One Hockey Tournament tonight at 8:00. Hear the broadcast on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Fulmer

MLB
The Detroit Tigers avoided a late-inning collapse, and edged the Boston Red Sox 6-5 in their home opener Friday. Michael Fulmer pitched six shutout inning, and allowed just four hits. Victor Martinez drove in Ian Kinsler with a sacrifice fly in the first inning to give Detroit an early lead. Martinez’ RBI single in the sixth increased the lead to 2-0, and James McCann’s two-tun homer in the seventh made it 4-0. The Red Sox then scored five runs off Bruce Rondon, Alex Wilson and Francisco Rodriguez in the top of the eighth inning to take the lead. Mikie Mahtook tied it with an RBI double in the bottom of the eighth, and JaCoby Jones drew a bases-loaded walk to force in the winning run. Rodriguez gave up a couple of hits in the top of the ninth, but worked his way out of trouble to earn the win. The Tigers host the Red Sox again this afternoon.  Jordan Zimmermann will start against Eduardo Rodriguez. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:45 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Nelson

Ryan Braun ran home on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 11th inning, as the Milwaukee Brewers edged the Chicago Cubs 2-1 Friday night. Jimmy Nelson gave up a run on four hits in six innings. Five relievers combined to allow just two more hits over the rest of the game. The Brewers entertain the Chicago Cubs again tonight. Tommy Milone will pitch against Kyle Hendricks.

Marjanović

NBA
Boban Marjanović scored a career-best 27 points and added 12 rebounds as the Detroit Pistons came from behind to defeat the Houston Rockets 114-109 Friday night. With his team essentially eliminated from the playoffs, coach Stan Van Gundy took a long look at Marjanović and Henry Ellenson. Both were impressive – Ellenson finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds. The Pistons have three games remaining. They’ll play at Memphis tomorrow night.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope was a late arrival for the game. He came from a hospital, where his wife had just given birth to a baby boy.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings host the Montreal Canadiens tonight. Faceoff is at 7:00. Detroit will play its final game of the season, and its final game at Joe Louis Arena, against the New Jersey Devils tomorrow. Faceoff will be at 5:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
