Team CC Opens Title Bid with Shutout Win – Friday Sports Wrap

Team CC
Team Copper Country opened its bid for a national title with a 4-0 victory over Hamden, Connecticut, yesterday. Ted Randell’s short-handed goal late in the first period proved to be the game winner. Dawson McKay’s hat trick sealed the win. His three goals came in quick succession – two in the final 72 seconds of the second period, and one just 15 seconds into the third stanza. Brent Loukus and Rory Anderson each had two assists. Dawson Kero stopped 20 shots to earn the shutout. Team CC will continue opening round play this afternoon against the Warwick Wildcats from Warwick, Pennsylvania. Pregame coverage will begin around 2:45. They’ll close pool play against the Foothills Flyers from Littleton, Colorado, tomorrow at 1:00. We’ll broadcast all of Team CC’s games on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

High School
The Calumet baseball team and the Hancock softball team open their seasons with tournament games at Wisconsin Dells today and tomorrow.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University baseball team plays doubleheaders at the University of Chicago tomorrow and Sunday.

MTU
The Michigan Tech volleyball team has a new assistant coach. Cindy Pindral was a volunteer coach with the team last season. She played college ball at the university of Florida and the University of Colorado Springs.

NCAA
Minnesota-Duluth and Denver will meet in the championship game of the NCAA Division One Hockey Tournament. UMD scored with 26 seconds remaining to edge Harvard 2-1 in their semifinal game last night. Denver routed Notre Dame 6-1. The Pioneers and the Bulldogs will play for the title tomorrow night at 8:00. Hear the broadcast on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Boyd

MLB
Matt Boyd struggled in his first start of the season, and the Detroit Tigers lost to the Chicago White Sox 11-2 yesterday. Boyd was charged with five runs over 2-1/3rd innings. Anibal Sanchez replaced him, and fared no better – five runs over 3-2/3rds innings. Tyler Collins homered for Detroit. The Tigers host the Boston Red Sox in their home opener this afternoon. Michael Fulmer will start against Derek Holland. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:45 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Anderson

The Milwaukee Brewers fell to the Colorado Rockies 2-1 yesterday. Chase Anderson turned in a good start, allowing just one run over six innings. Neftali Feliz took the loss when he gave up a home run to Nolan Arenado in the ninth. Kirk Nieuwenhuis homered for the Crew. The Brewers entertain the Chicago Cubs tonight. Jimmy Nelson will pitch against Brett Anderson.

Milwaukee claimed utilityman Nick Franklin off waivers yesterday, after he was cut by the Rays. To make room for him on the 40-man roster, they designated Colorado Springs pitcher Michael Blazek for assignment. To make room on the 25-man major league roster, they sent pitcher Taylor Jungmann down to Double-A Biloxi.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons were officially eliminated from the playoffs, as the Chicago Bulls and Indiana Pacers both won their games last night. The Pistons play at Houston tonight. Tip-off is at 8:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings host the Montreal Canadiens tomorrow night. Faceoff is at 7:00. Detroit will play its final game of the season, and its final game at Joe Louis Arena, against the New Jersey Devils on Sunday. Faceoff will be at 5:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Wings have called prospect Matt Lorito up from Grand Rapids for the final weekend. He could fill in for Andreas Athanasiou, who is suffering from a rib injury.
