Team CC
Team Copper Country rode a strong finish to a 5-2 victory over the Clarence, New York, Mustangs in the U-18 Tier Two national championship game yesterday afternoon. The Mustangs took an early lead six minutes into the game. Jed Pietila’s goal tied it six minutes later, and the first period ended with the teams knotted at one. Clarence pulled ahead with a goal two minutes into the second period, but it would be their final score of the game. Ted Randell tied it with a power play goal three minutes later. Jacob Kruse’s tally gave Team CC a 3-2 lead at the end of the second period. Randell’s second goal of the game early in the third period provided a cushion, and Rory Anderson added an empty-net exclamation point with six seconds remaining.

Castellanos

MLB
Nicholas Castellanos’ RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted the Detroit Tigers to a 2-1 victory over the Boston Red Sox yesterday. Team aces Justin Verlander and Chris Sale kept the bats at bay. Verlander loaded the bases in the second inning, but allowed just one run. He pitched seven innings. Sale threw five innings of shutout ball, but gave up a solo home run to Ian Kinsler in the sixth. He lost the game when Castellanos singled home Andrew Romine with two outs in the eighth.

The Tigers host the Minnesota Twins this afternoon. Matt Boyd will start against Hector Santiago. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:45 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons said “goodbye” to the Palace of Auburn Hills with a 105-101 loss to the Washington Wizards last night. Dennis Rodman delivered the ball for the opening tipoff. The Pistons will close their season on the road tomorrow at Orlando. Tipoff is at 8:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY. The team will relocate to the new Little Caesar’s Arena in downtown Detroit next season.
