Tech Hockey Takes Carnival Series – Sunday Sports Wrap

MTU
The Michigan Tech hockey team bounced back from a 3-2 loss to Ferris State Friday night, and defeated the Bulldogs 5-2 on Saturday. Thomas Beretta’s goal six minutes into the game gave the Huskies a lead they would never relinquish. Reid Sturos added to the advantage late in the first quarter. Ferris answered with a goal early in the second period. Tyler Heinonen’s tally late in the second restored the two-goal advantage. Ferris closed the gap to one early in the third period, but the Huskies defense prevailed for the rest of the game. Chris Leibinger and Sturos scored in the closing minute to widen the advantage.

Anderson

Those two late goals earned the Huskies the MacInnes Cup for the fifth straight season. The Winter Carnival championship goes to the team with the most total goals in the two games.

Heath

The Michigan Tech Tech basketball teams celebrated Senior Day with a pair of victories over Saginaw Valley State. The Tech women held the Cardinals to just nine points in the first quarter, and cruised to an 82-57 victory. Morgan Anderson paced the Huskies with 20 points.

The men’s game was closer. The lead changed hands seven times in the first half. Tech took the lead for good early in the second half. The Huskies built an 11-point advantage, then held on through the final minutes to earn a 66-60 victory. Tommy Lucca, Jordan Chartier and Jason Hawke each hit a pair of of free throws in the closing 65 seconds to assure the win. Bryan Heath led MTU with 18 points.

Tolvinen

NMU
The Northern Michigan University hockey team earned its fifth-straight shutout, blanking Alaska-Fairbanks 2-0 Saturday night. Goalie Atte Tolvanen stopped a career-best 48 shots to tie the all-time NCAA record for consecutive shutouts. Blaine Lacher of Lake Superior State also turned in five consecutive shutouts in the 1993-1994 season. Dating back to Jan. 20’s game against Alaska-Anchorage, Tolvanen has gone 335:39 minutes without allowing a goal, good for second in NCAA men’s history. Over that stretch, he has made 207-consecutive saves. The Wildcats defeated the Nanooks 3-0 Friday night.

The NMU women’s basketball team defeated Wayne State 79-60 Saturday. The men fell to the Warriors 70-64.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University men’s hockey team concluded a winless season with a 7-1 loss to Lake Forest College Saturday. Thomas Clayton scored the Lions’ only goal. Walker Enstad made 32 saves. Finlandia lost 5-2 to Lake Forest College Friday afternoon.

The day went better for the Finlandia women’s team, which snapped its 70-game losing streak with a 2-1 overtime victory over St. Norbert Saturday. The Knights opened the scoring, but Sierra Meiners’ goal late in the first period tied the game. Freshman goalie Annah Smiddy then turned away shot after shot, as St. Norbert outshot the Lions 38-12 through regulation. Kait Ryynanen scored the game-winner on a power play just nine seconds into overtime. The Lions lost 7-0 to St. Norbert Friday.

J. Daavettila

After a tight first half, the Finlandia women’s basketball team went cold in the second half, and lost to Bethany Lutheran College 83-50 Saturday. Kelsie Richards and Julia Daavettila each scored 14 for the Lions. On Friday, Finlandia defeated Martin Luther College 66-59.

Geralds

The Finlandia men’s team suffered a tight 78-75 loss to Bethany Lutheran on Saturday. The game was tight throughout. The Lions missed a couple of three-point attempts that would have forced overtime in the closing seconds. Marcus Geralds had 29 points and 14 rebounds for Finlandia. On Friday, the Lions dominated the Martin Luther College 96-69.

GLHL
In Great Lakes Hockey League play, the Calumet Wolverines lost 5-4 to the Eagle River Falcons Friday night. The Portage Lake Pioneers defeated the Falcons 7-6 in a shootout Saturday evening.

Vanek

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings lost 2-1 at Columbus Saturday. Thomas Vanek scored Detroit’s only goal, as the Wings played their first game since the death of team owner Mike Ilitch. Another shot by Vanek in the closing seconds that would have tied the game hit the crossbar. Petr Mrazek made 37 saves, and took the loss. The Wings skate at Minnesota this afternoon. Faceoff is at 3:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Vanek injured his ankle during the third period, and missed some time while it was taped up. He returned to the ice, but his status for today’s game is uncertain.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons will play at Toronto today at 6:00. We’ll join the game after Red Wings hockey on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
