Thatcher Markham 5K Memorial Run On Friday

Thatcher Markham has become a name synonymous with many events in the Copper Country. Thatcher’s family and the local community lost Thatcher at 12 years old as a victim of the 2018 Father’s Day flood in northern Houghton County. He is remembered through many local events and remembrances and this race is another way to make sure he is never forgotten by the Keweenaw. The Thatcher Markham 5K run will be held during Bridgefest this year.

“So the registration fee covers race and professional timing by Superior Timing, and everyone gets a T-shirt, and then the proceeds from the race after we cover our cost are split between the Copper Country Junior Hockey Association, which Thatcher was heavily involved in throughout his life, and also the Pigs n’ Heat fund, which first responders organized to help fire and crime victims, so the proceeds get split evenly between those two organizations.” – Ryan Towles, Race Director of the Thatcher Markham Memorial Run

Participants will have spectators that are also present for the Bridgefest Parade, and are welcome to run, walk, or both.

“So it starts where the parade starts in west Hancock, we run backwards along US-41 through downtown Hancock over the bridge, through downtown Houghton, when we come out of downtown Houghton, we’re going to proceed east on College Avenue to Michigan Tech, cut down behind the Michigan Tech Campus to the bike path, and the bike path back to the brand new Houghton Pier that’s between the Lakeshore Center and the Portage Lake District Library.”Ryan Towles, Race Director of the Thatcher Markham Memorial Run

The race will take place this Friday at 7 pm, with registration ending at 6pm the same day.

You can find more information and purchase tickets on the race website.
