Tigers Drop Fourth Straight – Sunday Sports Wrap

The Detroit Tigers came from behind to force extra innings, but the Chicago White Sox scored twice in the 10th to take a 6-4 victory Saturday. Chicago scored single runs off starter Michael Fulmer in each of the first three innings. Fulmer settled down, and completed six innings. The Tigers came back. Victor Martinez singled home a run in the first, and Justin Upton drove in another with a single in the sixth. José Abreu’s second home run of the game gave the Sox a two-run lead in the eighth. Detroit tied the game in the bottom of the ninth with  Martinez home run and a pinch-hit RBI single by Alex Avila. Justin Wilson took over on the mound for the Tigers in the top of the 10th inning. He gave up a home run to Melkey Cabrera, and an RBI triple to Avisail Garcia, and took the loss.

Nelson

The Tigers entertain the White Sox again this afternoon. Jordan Zimmermann will pitch against Miguel González. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:45 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Matt Kemp hit three home runs, as the Atlanta Braves pounded the Milwaukee Brewers 11-3 Saturday. Jimmy Nelson struggled through five innings, giving up five runs on 11 hits. Tommy Milone allowed four runs in two innings of relief, and Jhan Mariñez let in two more in a single inning. The Brewers will host the Braves again this afternoon. Matt Garza will start against Mike Foltynewicz.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University baseball team finished its season with a doubleheader split at Maranatha Baptist University Saturday. The Lions won the opener 7-5. Joey Krug had three hits and drove in two runs. He also set a new Finlandia team record by striking out 10 batters. Finlandia lost the nightcap 13-0.

NHL
In the NHL playoffs yesterday…
– The Penguins defeated the Capitals 6-2. Pittsburgh leads that series 2-0.
– The Rangers got past the Senators 6-5 in double overtime. Ottawa leads that series 2-0.

Today…
– The Blues face the Predators. That set is tied 1-1.
– The Ducks meet the Oilers. Edmonton leads that series 2-0.

At the NHL lottery drawing in Toronto Saturday, the Detroit Red Wings came away with the ninth pick in the upcoming draft. The New Jersey Devils will pick first when the draft begins Jun 23rd. The ninth pick will be Detroit’s highest since 1990.

NBA
In the NBA playoffs this afternoon…
– The Clippers and Jazz will conclude their first-round series, which is tied 3-3.
– The Celtics and Wizards will open their second-round series.

NFL
In the final rounds of the NFL Draft Saturday…

The Detroit Lions chose Toledo tight end Michael Roberts in the fourth round, and San Diego cornerback Jamal Agnew in the fifth. In the sixth, they took Arkansas defensive end Jeremiah Ledbetter, with their own pick and used an additional selection they got from the New England Patriots to select Miami quarterback Brad Kaaya. The closed the draft by taking Eastern Michigan University defensive end Pat O’Connor in the seventh round.

The Green Bay Packers had a lot of late picks. They used an additional fourth-round pick they got from the Cleveland Browns to take Wisconsin linebacker Vince Biegel, then used their own fourth-round pick to take BYU running back Jamaal Williams. They used a fifth-round pick they got via trade to select Purdue wide receiver DeAngelo Yancey, then used a compensatory pick to take Texas-El Paso running back Aaron Jones. They used their sixth-round selection to take South Florida center Kofi Amichia. They used a seventh-round pick they got from the Broncos to tab Utah State running back Devante Mays, and closed the draft by selecting LSU wide receiver Malachi Dupre with their own seventh-round pick.
