– Jeffers travels to L’Anse.

MLB
The Arizona Diamondbacks slugged three home runs, and defeated the Detroit Tigers 7-1 last night. Daniel Norris took the loss, allowing up four runs – three of them earned – over six innings. Two of the homers came off Aníbal Sánchez, who gave up three runs in the seventh.

The Tigers open a four-game series against the Angels in Los Angeles tonight. Michael Fulmer will start against JC Ramirez. Pregame coverage will begin at 9:45 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Second baseman Ian Kinsler could return to the Tigers lineup tonight. He’s been out for a week with a sore hamstring.

Scahill

The Milwaukee Brewers scored four runs in the fifth inning, and downed the Boston Red Sox 7-4 last night. Milwaukee starter Chase Anderson struggled, giving up nine hits, but allowing only to runs before leaving in the fifth inning. Rob Scahill got the win in relief.

Those teams play in Milwaukee again this afternoon. Jimmy Nelson will pitch against Eduardo Rodriguez.

Ryan Braun was back in the Milwaukee lineup last night, after missing a week with an arm injury. His return didn’t last long. Braun left the game in the fifth inning with tightness in his left calf. He’ll be evaluated today.

NHL
In the NHL playoffs yesterday…
– The Penguins advanced with a 2-0 win over the Capitals.
– The Oilers eliminated the Ducks with a 2-1 victory.

That sets up the conference finals. The Western Conference series will open tomorrow night, as the Ducks face the Predators. The Penguins and Senators will begin the Eastern Conference series on Saturday.

NBA
In the NBA playoffs yesterday…
– The Celtics defeated the Wizards 123-101. Boston leads that series 3-2.

Tonight…
– The Rockets host the Spurs. San Antonio leads that series 3-2.

Former Michigan Tech hockey star Shane Hanna has signed a contract with the Texas Stars of the American Hockey League for next season.

Four Copper Country athletes will be inducted into the Upper Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame Saturday. They include longtime Calumet High School hockey coach Jim Crawford, Hancock native and current Traverse City Central hockey coach Chris Givens, former Olympic and pro skier Mary (Seaton) Brush of Hancock, and the late Carl (Scuppy) Backstrom of Calumet. They’re joined in this year’s class by Theresa Altobelli of Iron Mountain, Lisa (Roell) Harry of Kingsford, Greg Londo of Gwinn and Wakefield, Brad Shouldice of Sault Ste. Marie, the late Lou Thesz of Daggett, and the late Al Inkala of Wakefield.
