Village of Laurium Plans to Develop Sidewalk Ordinance, and Keweenaw Aspirus Airlifts Going Well

Keweenaw Aspirus has made great use out of space in their parking lot to accommodate medical air transports from the region. So far Aspirus has used the landing area north of the hospital ten times. She praised first responders from the village for their assistance at each transport, even late in the night. Verran also noted that the hospital may begin seeing more transports with a third airlift company out of Duluth.

The Village will begin seeking to bring on a part time seasonal work with the public works department this summer. Laurium has identified a candidate, but will need to wait for university semesters to end. In addition to a new hire in the DPW, Laurium will have a new police officer start with the village police department in August, after completing training at the police academy.

And finally the Village will begin looking into developing a sidewalk ordinance that will focus on the division of responsibility between property owners and the village for side walk maintenance. The village has not set a timeline for developing language for the ordinance. Village President John Sullivan also wished to remind rental owners that all property registrations for commercial and private residential rentals have to be submitted to the village by May 15th. Please contact the village of Laurium with any questions.
