Flint residents are one step closer to being credited for past or future water bills after a Michigan House committee passed a $30 million supplemental spending bill Wednesday.
Jody Lundquist, Flint’s chief financial officer, tells committee members the city’s water crisis is far from over but the money will provide residents with an immediate financial boost.
However she says even with some of the money going to prop up the city’s water fund, it will run out of money by the end of the year as more and more people stop paying their water bills.
She says the only way to stem that is to improve the infrastructure in Flint, which would boost the public’s confidence in what comes out of the tap.
The city’s water is undrinkable after lead from service pipes leached into the drinking water.
The emergency spending bill now awaits a vote in the full Michigan House.
