A Bill to Keep Sex Offenders Away From Schools Passes Senate Committee

A bill to reinstate the law banning sex offenders from being near schools has cleared a Senate committee.

In April, a federal judge struck down Michigan’s law prohibiting registered sex offenders from being within 1,000 feet.

The judge ruled the law was unconstitutionally vague.

So, Senator Rick Jones is sponsoring a bill, he says, is more specific and he thinks will hold up to the federal court standard.

Jones bill also includes an exemption for sex offenders who are parents and not been ordered to stay away from kids, to attend school functions for their own child.

The bill now heads to the full Senate.
