A Ceremony on the Capitol Lawn to Thank Vietnam Veterans

State lawmakers spent the afternoon Thursday on the state Capitol lawn honoring Vietnam veterans for their service.

More than 1,000 Vietnam vets attended the event organized by the office of Senator Mike Kowall.

He says they decided to put on the ceremony after realizing the Michigan Legislature had never officially thanked Vietnam veterans.

State Senators Margaret O’Brien, Vincent Gregory and David Knezek all spoke at the event.

Knezek, an Iraq War veteran, thanked the Vietnam veterans saying they paved the way for his generation of veterans to serve the country with honor and then make the transition back home.

According to the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, there are nearly 250,000 Vietnam War vets living in Michigan.
