Bill to add Vehicle-Related Injuries on Private Property a Moving Violation Signed by Governor

Legislation to make a vehicle -related injury or death that happens in parking lots a moving violation has been signed into law.

The governor signed the bill, under which it would be a moving violation when a motorist causes an injury or death in places open to the general public.

Sponsor, State Representative Sam Singh, D-East Lansing, introduced the measure after three people were hit by a truck in a Meijer parking lot.

Criminal charges could not be brought against the driver because the incident happened on private property.

Under Singh’s bill, a moving violation in one of these places that causes death would be punishable by up to a year in prison and/or a $2,000 fine.

A person who causes injury would face up to 93 days in jail and up to a $500 fine.
