Bill Would Lower Age for Someone Who Wants to Run for Legislature or Governor

Teenagers could run to be a state lawmaker and someone just legally able to drink alcohol could run for governor under a resolution awaiting a vote in a Michigan House committee.

State Representative Aaron Miller, R-Sturgis, is sponsoring the proposal to lower the age someone could run to be a senator or representative to 18 years old and the age to run for governor to 21.

Right now you have to be 21 years old to run for a seat in the legislature and 30 years old to run for governor.

The measure would also lower the residency requirement for someone who wants to be governor from four years to three years.

Miller says he doesn’t think the legislature will be overrun by a slew of 18 year olds if the age is changed.

If the resolution were to pass both the House and Senate then the question would be posed to voters in the November general election.
