Bill Would Provide Compensation For The Wrongfully Convicted

State lawmakers have introduced a bill that would require that the state compensate the wrongfully convicted.

Democrats, Senator Steve Bieda and Representative Stephanie Chang, announced legislation Thursday that would create the Wrongful Imprisonment Compensation Act.

Bieda says the state currently offers nothing to exonerees, but under his bill the state would offer $60,000 for each year a person was wrongfully imprisoned.

Chang says the measure will help wrongly convicted individuals re-establish their lives.

Thirty states and the federal government already offer compensation to those who have been exonerated.
