UPDATE: Boil water advisory lifted in Hubbell

UPDATE: Upper Michigan Water Company says that the boil water advisory for Hubbell has been lifted as of 1:11 PM Monday.

A water main break has caused pressure to fall precipitously throughout Hubbell, causing a boil water advisory. Readings are now down to 20 psi. The rupture occurred at the intersection of 10th Street and M-26. Crews on scene say that data shows the initial problem started around 6 PM Thursday evening but Upper Michigan Water Company did not become aware of the issue for several hours.

If you cannot use bottled water, it is recommended that any liquid being used for cooking or consumption be brought to a boil for at least two minutes to kill any potential contaminants.

Emergency crews have been at the site since 2 AM. Motorists should be aware of a shoulder closure and reduce speed near the site. No cause is known at this time but cold temperatures are suspected. The thermometer was in the single digits when the break happened. As of 8:30 Friday morning, water was still flowing freely and there is no estimate for when the repair will be finished.

A river of ice stretches over a block, down 11th Street past B Avenue.

Once the main is fixed, water samples are sent to the state lab for evaluation. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, results have been slower in coming back as the facility is tied up with other testing. When Adams Township’s water system lost pressure in April 2021 both it and the City of Hancock were under an advisory for nearly three days.
