Breast And Cervical Cancer Awareness Seminar

Hancock, MI –Upper Great Lakes Family Health Center is hosting a Women’s Health Seminar on Breast and Cervical Cancer Awareness on Wednesday, May 27, 2015.  The seminar will be held at UP Health Systems– Portage conference rooms from5:30pm to 7:00pm.

Brianne Sable, Physician Assistant (PA) from the Oncology Department at UP Health System-Portage, will be featured guest speaker.   Other guests include Dr. Theresa Holladay, OBYGN from Upper Great Lakes Family Health Center OBGYN Clinic in Hancock, registered dietitian, Kelsae Eliszewski and cancer survivors, Angie Van Tassel and Mary Zanoni.  Community resources from Western Upper Peninsula Health Department will also be available.

Upper Great Lakes’ Community Health Worker, Amanda White, is organizing the event.  White said the event will provide women with information on the importance to getting screened and why screening matters.  According to The American Cancer Society, prior to regular screenings, cervical cancer was one of the most common causes of cancer deaths in American women.  1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime, but the death rate from breast cancer has been declining since 1989. The American Cancer Society attributes this decline to increased awareness, early detection from screenings as well as better treatments.

For more information about the Women’s Health Education Seminar on Breast and Cervical Cancer Awareness contact White at 906-483-1493.  RSVP would be appreciated for the event by Tuesday, May 26 at 5:00pm.

About Upper Great Lakes Family Health Center

Upper Great Lakes Family Health Center is your community based primary care center.  We are designated as a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) dedicated to providing high quality primary care to everyone regardless of their ability to pay.

Our team of health care providers and support staff has adopted the model of practice known as the Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH). PCMH is a model of healthcare based on an ongoing, personal relationship between a patient, doctor and the patient’s care team. Whatever the medical needs – primary or secondary, preventive care, acute care, chronic care, behavioral health, or end-of-life care – the patient has a medical “home”; a single, trusted doctor and care team, through which continuous, comprehensive and integrated care is provided.
