Calumet High School Drama Club receives funding for Acting On It Youth Mentor program

Calumet, MI –  April 27, 2016– The Calumet High School Drama Club has been awarded a grant of $2380 from the State of Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs (MCACA).  The grant was awarded through the MCACA peer review process and was one of 559 applications to compete for MCACA fiscal year 2016 funding.  The grant was awarded to the student-led Program Advisory Council through the MCACA New Leaders Retention & Engagement Program and was available for young leaders working on projects that focused on mentoring and/or engagement within the arts.

Organizations receiving a MCACA grant award are required to match those funds with other public and private dollars.  Local support of the project includes funding from the Keweenaw Community Foundation, the CLK Foundation, and the Public Schools of Calumet, Laurium, and Keweenaw.

The CHS Drama Club’s Acting On It: Youth Mentor Program promotes and supports the drama club’s mission to utilize the theatrical arts to provide social interaction, leadership development, and a safe environment for learning and creativity.  There are four components of the program, all of which involve collaboration with other organizations within the Copper Country as well as community outreach and engagement.  High School students will develop leadership skills while acting as peer mentors for younger students.  Students of all grade levels will be involved in the program.

“This has been an exciting year for our Drama Club with new programs and really exceptional students taking the lead.  It is awesome to see these student leaders be recognized and rewarded for their innovation and dedication,” said Dave Heinz, Drama Advisor.

The MCACA peer review process allows for each grant application to be competitively considered by a panel of in-state and out-of-state arts and culture professionals.  This ensures the taxpayers, who support this project through legislative appropriation, and all other visitors and residents in Michigan will have access to the highest quality arts and cultural experiences.

A complete list of grant awards around the state is available by contacting MCACA at (517) 241-4011, or by visiting the MCACA website.
