CCISD Gets An Update On Area-Wide Crisis Team

The newly-formed Area-Wide Crisis Team is preparing to take their next step.

The group was put together to respond to a crisis or tragedy that affects local school systems and was spearheaded by Copper Country Intermediate School District Superintendent George Stockero.

At the district’s February meeting, Stockero reviewed the first meeting of the crisis team, which took place last week.

There are 19 members of the group–which is comprised of school officials, law enforcement, clergy, mental health workers, medical care workers and emergency personnel.

The team is scheduled to meet again in April.

The current phase of security upgrades are complete at the CCISD facility on Hecla Street in Hancock. The improvements include a new key card system that’s tied into the alarms. Emergency door locks have been added in the administrative offices.

Stockero also gave an update on the status of recent legislation, including a bill that would allow a waiver for schools that have cooperative programs with local colleges to start school before Labor Day and another bill that would make the school calendar a prohibited subject for bargaining.

He also told the Board that Governor Rick Snyder’s budget proposal indicates that local schools would get an additional $120 per student, the blended student count would be 50/50 instead of 90/10 for the Fall and Spring semesters, and the ISD would get a 1.6 percent increase in funds. The House and Senate will present their proposals soon…so the budget will not be finalized until a later date.
