Charges Filed Against Former State Representatives Courser And Gamrat

The lawyer for former State Rep. Todd Courser says charges against his client that deal with an attempted cover-up of an extramarital affair are both “baseless” and “political.”

In a statement, the attorney for the former legislator who resigned last year says the charges are designed to take the heat off the misconduct of others.

Courser-GamratCourser and former Rep. Cindy Gamrat grabbed headlines last year for having an affair.

Both are now facing criminal charges for lying under oath during a Michigan House investigation into allegations of misconduct.

An attorney for Gamrat says the charges ignore the constitution.

Attorney General Bill Schuette says Todd Courser is being charged with one count of perjury and three counts of misconduct while Cindy Gamrat is being charged with two counts of misconduct.

The perjury charge is punishable by up to 15 years in prison while the misconduct charges carry a five year prison sentence.

Schuette says the charges show that no one is above the law, including the people who make the laws.

Courser resigned early in the morning last September while Gamrat was expelled from the House a short time later.

The two had an affair and were accused of using state resources to cover it up.

Warrants were issued for Courser and Gamrat’s arrest Friday morning.
