Clean up planned for tip of the Keweenaw

The Keweenaw Outdoor Recreation Coalition is planning its first-ever clean up targeting the extreme reaches of the peninsula, east of Copper Harbor. Gina Nicholas says the organization is planning for around 30 volunteers on Saturday to take part, but is prepared for many more.

RSVPs are requested through the KORC Facebook page and the first group is expected to start up around 10 AM. Before heading out, a meeting will happen at the Copper Harbor Community Park to help assign groups to various areas and pass out equipment needed.

Nicholas says that the farther out volunteers span from Copper Harbor, the rougher the roads become. Not all vehicles are suitable to reach the outlying trails. Nicholas says KORC has plans for debris and objects that can’t be picked up by hand.

If they find things that are too large, we’ll have crews and trucks coming along. We’ll just ask those people to flag it. There are big metal objects and culverts and so forth, that are more than what we are expecting our volunteers to do.

The cleanup will wrap around 3:00 PM and The Mariner North restaurant is serving a meal afterwards as a thank you to the volunteers.
