Continuing Finnish Folk Education Throughout the Year

So many people in the community are excited to see winter has finally come to the Copper Country. Some were even so excited that classes had already filled up for the Finnish American Folk School’s Enrichment Classes ahead of Heikinpaiva. Director of the Folk School Clare Zuraw says for those who think they missed out, there are plenty of chances to learn new skills, create projects, and learn a little about Finnish culture throughout the year.

“Our next big festival after Heikinpaiva, comes in the summer which is Juhanas. For Juhanas this year we are planning weaving classes, and a playing workshop the jouhikko. And we will have some other events happening around that festival as well. However, it doesn’t have to be a festival time to take a class at the folk school. The folk school offers workshops, concerts, dancers, and other educational classes throughout the year.” Clare Zuraw, Director, Finnish America Folk School

The Finnish American folk school continues to operate from the first floor of the Jutilia Center. The school also continues to share skills that students can develop into well-developed gifts for close friends or family. Zuraw adds that through programs with the folk school residents even continue to share connections with their heritage.

“There are a lot of elements of that culture that are still a part of our modern culture and practices today. So, for example, cooking, learning how to cook piirakka or pies. Just like your grandma did. Learning how to knit just like your ancestors had is a great way to connect with your family heritage. It’s also a great way to pass the time in the winter. For example, knowing how to weave knowing how to work with your hands can be very therapeutic and very enjoyable.” Clare Zuraw, Director, Finnish America Folk School

While Heikinpaiva and other festival events draw many to the folk school to learn about their heritage, or to pick up a new skill. It doesn’t have to be a special time of the year to pick up a new hobby or learn a little about Finnish culture.
