Democrat Wants to Repeal Abortion opt-out law

A state Democrat has introduced a bill to repeal a law enacted last year requiring women to have additional insurance coverage if they want to get an abortion.

State Representative Sarah Roberts is behind the bill and says it’s not right to require someone to have extra coverage if they want to terminate a pregnancy after they’re told their baby won’t survive after birth.

Roberts says that procedure is called an inevitable abortion and wouldn’t be covered by regular insurance.

Insurance companies would only cover an abortion if the pregnancy endangered the mother’s life.

The rules are less stringent for women on Medicaid or the Healthy Michigan Plan.

Roberts is hopeful her legislation can at least get a hearing this fall when lawmakers return to Lansing from summer break.

The House is back on August 18th.
