Dems Not Giving Up on Redistricting Commission

It does not appear that the Michigan legislature will consider a Democrat-backed proposal to create a special commission to rewrite legislative and congressional district lines, but that doesn’t mean backers are giving up.

A resolution to change the Michigan Constitution has been introduced in Lansing, but Democrat-sponsors are being informed that it’s not likely to be heard in committee.

However outside groups have also been considering an effort to collect signatures proposing a constitutional redistricting commission on the statewide ballot next year.

Democrats lament the current system, which has the majority party in the legislature — at this time it’s the Republicans — in control of drawing the district lines, which Democrats say gives the GOP an unfair advantage come election time.
