Dianda Joins Call For Increasing Local Rail Service

The idea of rail service returning to the Keweenaw is picking up steam.

The topic has been a hot one among legislators in 2016 with attention being paid to it by those seeking office and those currently serving in the electorate.

Democrat Lon Johnson and Republican Jason Allen, both vying for the 1st Congressional District, have stated support for bringing back local rail service.

U.S. Senator Gary Peters and State Representative Scott Dianda have also been pushing the idea.

Dianda says it starts with getting people on board.

Currently, rail lines reach Baraga County with limited freight service, but there is talk that investing in transportation could also create a demand for passenger rail service as well.

Dianda says rail service would help overcome some of the obstacles of building the economy of the area.

You can hear the entire interview with Scott Dianda on this week’s episode of Copper Country Today.
