Energy Policy Reform Discussion Spilling in to 2016

The Michigan House and Michigan Senate will each pick up where it’s left off on crafting a new energy policy for the state when lawmakers return after the first of the year.

In 2015 each chamber held lengthy committee hearings spread out of from the spring into the fall.

The House managed to cough its energy plan out of committee in November while the Senate is still tweaking its proposal.

House Speaker Kevin Cotter says, given the size and scope of the plan and the desire to get it right, it’s an issue that shouldn’t be rushed.

The House plan that awaits lawmakers when they return in January keeps the 10 percent choice market in place and would encourage – not require – utilities to source 30 percent of their power from renewable sources by 2025.

It also offers incentives to utilities for creating energy efficiency programs.
