Expanded Hours of Operation at the Calumet Visitor Center

Keweenaw National Historical Park is expanding hours of operation at its Calumet Visitor Center as the park gets ready for a busy summer season.

For the month of May, the Visitor Center will be open Thursday through Saturday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, and from 12:00 noon to 5:00 pm on Sundays. Beginning on Memorial Day, the facility will be open seven days a week, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm from Monday through Saturday, and 12:00 to 5:00 on Sundays.

The Visitor Center is free and offers three floors of interactive exhibits about the history of copper mining in the Calumet region. Short films, audio-visual programs, and museum objects reveal the area’s geology and history. Exhibits reveal Calumet’s place on the national stage of copper production, and include the individual voices of local miners, teachers, and nurses who lived Calumet’s copper mining history. It’s also a great place to start your Keweenaw adventure by mapping out the 21 official Keweenaw Heritage Sites, located from Ontonagon to Copper Harbor, where you can explore Keweenaw history in the places it happened. Park Rangers are on hand and are happy to help you learn more about copper mining history and plan your visit.

The NPS is celebrating 100 years of service in 2016 and as part of the Centennial celebration, we are inviting everyone to Find Your Park, whether at an iconic destination like the Grand Canyon or the park at your doorstep. Finding the Calumet Visitor Center is expected to be easier this summer than ever before: funds from the Land and Water Conservation fund were used to purchase a parking lot north of the building, which will give visitors a dedicated parking area. This will alleviate congestion along Red Jacket Road and make it easier for our neighbors to park and access businesses and events in downtown Calumet. Keweenaw National Historical Park is grateful for this unexpected support from the Regional and Washington Offices and we are sure our visitors—and neighbors—will appreciate it as well.
