Former Hancock mayor and longtime Houghton businessman Dan Lorenzetti passed away on Thursday.

Lorenzetti grew up in Quincy, studied at Suomi College and Northern Michigan University, and spent 10 years as an educator in the state of Wisconsin. He returned to the Copper Country in 1978 to take over the family business, Superior Block Company in Houghton.

Lorenzetti was elected Mayor of Hancock in 1981. He served as chairman of the City Building Authority for 25 years. He also spent nearly 20 years on the Torch Lake Advisory Council, and was instrumental in resolving many of the lake’s contamination problems.

A strong supporter of Michigan Tech, Lorenzetti was a driving force in the installation of snow-making equipment at Mont Ripley, led the drive to plant 100 trees in the Memorial Grove project, and was a ground-level supporter of Alumni Way.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday morning at the Church of the Resurrection in Hancock. The O’Neill-Dennis Funeral Home is handling funeral arrangements, and you can get full details at their website.
