Governor Signs Bill to Regulate Ignition Interlock Industry

The governor has signed into law bills that set guidelines for the Secretary of State’s (SOS) office to oversee the ignition interlock program won.

Under the legislation, the devices, which prevent a person who has had alcohol from driving, would have to be installed by a licensed technician in a licensed facility.

The ignition interlocks would also have to be updated to meet National Highway Traffic Safety Administration standards.

Bill sponsor, State Senator Tonya Schuitmaker, says the changes will bring integrity to the oversight of the program while improving safety on Michigan roads.

Mobile installers have opposed the legislation saying the changes will put them out of work.
