Houghton Cell Tower Project Canceled

A proposed cell phone tower that would have been located adjacent to the Houghton Elementary School will not be built. Parents of students at the school expressed concern about potential health hazards caused by the tower. (See our story about Sunday’s community meeting here.) In an email release this morning, Houghton-Portage Township Schools Superintendent Doreen Klingbeil said, “After exploring our options and having conversations with Verizon, Verizon has notified me that they are withdrawing their application to build the tower.”

The 75-foot tower would have been located about 300 feet from the school.
