Houghton City Council Preview: Animals, Shipping Containers, and Landscaping

The agenda for the Houghton City Council meeting tonight contains 3 public hearings before the council meeting. There will be one for the Pier Placemaking Project closeout, and two for proposed ordinances, 2023-330 and 2023-331.

Proposed ordinance 2023-330 aims to amend chapter 10 of the Houghton City Code regarding animals. This includes heavily restricting or banning the ownership of livestock, including bees, within the city limits that is not zoned for agricultural use. The ordinance also exotic animals or venomous insects or snakes.

Proposed ordinance 2023-331 aims to amend chapter 34 of the Houghton City Code in regards to landscaping. Shipping containers will be prohibited as an accessory building in residential areas. The ordinance also defines gardens, pollinator gardens, and declares overgrown lawns as a nuisance.

Proposed ordinances 330 and 331 will be discussed during the meeting. The meeting will also include a Memorandum of Understanding for a School Resource Officer.

There will also be introductions for proposed ordinances 2023-332 and 2023-333.

The meeting starts at 5:30p.m. at the City Council Chambers in downtown Houghton.
