Houghton City Council to Vote on Beekeeping Ordinance Tonight

The Houghton City Council meeting will hold a public hearing for ordinance 2023-330 tonight, which will place rules and restrictions on animals within city limits, such as beekeeping, rabbits, and poultry.

The proposed ordinance accepted the suggestions of the Copper Country Beekeeping Club, which limits the number of beehives to 2 per property, and each must be no bigger than 20 cubic feet. There are further restrictions such as on the placement regarding distance from property lines and sidewalks, flyaway barriers, and water supply.

The public hearing will prelude the city council meeting.

The meeting will address the engineering amendment to reduce the cost of the complex lakeshore drive project.

The council will also vote on selling a sliver of land just alongside Sharon Avenue by Enterprise drive that is thought to have gotten lost paperwork.

The meeting will take place tonight starting at 5:30 at the City of Houghton City Center chambers.
