Houghton Receives U.S. Funding for Sewer, Water Upgrades

The City of Houghton is getting some federal money to help rebuild its municipal water and sewer systems. USDA Rural Development is providing a 1.5-million dollar grant and a half-million dollar loan for sewer system work, and a 1.75-million dollar loan for water system improvements. The loans can be paid off over 40 years at 2.375 percent interest. Both the Houghton water and sewer systems were installed more than a century ago. The grants note that both need upgrades to meet current state standards.
