Like every town in the Copper Country, this year’s rough winter is taking a toll in the City of Houghton. But the city is coping with the situation. At Wednesday night’s city council meeting, city manager Eric Waara reported that snow removal equipment is holding up well. Waara also said that plans for a snowhouse in the city are progressing. It should be ready by the Michigan Tech Winter Carnival.
Police Chief John Donnelly told the council that a total of 20 auto accidents were reported in the last couple of weeks. The council approved the purchase of a new police vehicle. Part of the money will be supplied by a $14,000 Rural Development Grant.
A number of commission appointments were made at the meeting. They included: Gary Lubinski and Gernot Joachim to the planning commission, Debbie Zei to the housing commission, Mike Tomasi and Richard Gray to the DDA/TIFA, David Plowe and Robert Megowan to the Portage Lake Water and Sewage Authority, Illa Garver to the board of review, and Dan Salo to the Local Development Finance Authority.
