House Passed Presumptive Parole Bills Likely to Change in Senate

The Republican leader in the Michigan Senate expects changes to bills that would allow nonviolent inmates to get out of prison earlier.

The presumptive parole legislation would allow nonviolent offenders to get out of prison after serving their minimum sentence. The legislation has already cleared the state House.

But Senate Majority Leader Arlan Meekhof expects some more work to be done on the bills in his chamber.

He says they are looking at some other corrections reforms that they’ll probably combine with the bills to come up with a better package.

Meekhof says presumptive parole hasn’t been an issue in the Senate and it’s something they’ll have to spend some time looking at.
