Human Remains Unearthed At Historic Cemetery–Hancock City Council Meeting Recap–November 18, 2015

Hancock City Hall FeatureUpgrades, Grants and a cemetery were the topics at Wednesday night’s Hancock City Council Meeting.

The council approved an application to a MSHDA grant that would provide much needed rehab to apartments at 101 Quincy Street.

A recent MSHDA grant saw improvements to 9 apartments attached to other historic downtown buildings.

This new project would focus on getting the 127 year old Wisti-Lawton building back to its historical appearance. The building owner and community members offered input and extended that the building’s history makes it a very worthy candidate for the grant.

Friends of the Quincy Mine Cemetery were present at the meeting. They expressed concerns about the care and future of the Quincy Mining Company Cemetery, also known as the Ingot Street Cemetery.

In a letter to the current owner of the property, the group mentioned multiple incidents of accidental uncovering of human remains. Their most recent concern is the property listing for the 5 acre land that encompasses the cemetery. Paul Campbell, a representative for the Friends of the Quincy Mine Cemetery said that the real estate listing has no mention of the historical cemetery and that the property is listed for commercial development.

Hancock Mayor Lisa McKenzie expressed her hopes that action can be taken and encouraged the group to continue their efforts. City Manager Glenn Anderson said he would like to set up a discussion on the topic.

The next scheduled Hancock City Council meeting is Wednesday, December 16th.
