KBIC Vote on Lakeside Inn Purchase

Members of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community will vote on a proposal to purchase the Baraga Lakeside Inn and the adjacent marina. The proposed purchase was approved by the Tribal Council on July 17th. Because it involves spending more than $10,000, Tribal members must also approve it. If approved, the Tribe would pay $1,000 for the Lakeside Inn and its 50% ownership of the marina, and would assume no more than $2.6 million in existing debt. The Tribe would also pay $150,000 to Bob Ross for his separate 50% ownership of the marina. The Tribe hopes to relocate its Baraga casino into expanded facilities at the Lakeside Inn. Tribal Council President Donald Shalifoe has said the entire project will probably cost around $36 million.
