Keweenaw Heritage Grant Applications Now Being Accepted

(Calumet, MI) The Keweenaw National Historical Park (NHP) Advisory Commission and the National Park Service announce the 2016 Keweenaw Heritage Grants. The purpose of this grant program is to assist interested parties with activities related to the preservation and interpretation of the story of copper. As in past years, the proposed grant project or program must be located within the legislated boundaries of Keweenaw NHP; affiliated with an existing Keweenaw Heritage Site; or located at the Cliff Mine, along Torch Lake, or within the community of Painesdale.

In 2016, the Keweenaw NHP Advisory Commission will be offering up to $150,000. Advisory Commission grants are subject to a 1-to-1 match, although up to 100% of the match may be in-kind. Grants will range between $1,000 and $15,000.

All organizations/applicants may submit up to two applications, which must be prioritized when submitted. Organizations that operate Keweenaw Heritage Sites will receive greater consideration for their highest priority grant application, although all applications will be considered. Projects will be selected for funding based on answers provided in the application, and to achieve a balance of project types and a distribution of locations.

Grant applications are available at park headquarters or on the park’s website, www.nps.gov/kewe.

Applications are due by the close of business (5:00 PM) on Friday, April 8, 2016. Applications will be reviewed by a panel of Advisory Commission members and NPS staff. Grant awards will be announced by May 1 and grant funds are expected be available to successful applicants by June 1, 2016.

Grant applicants are encouraged to seek professional advice and assistance with application planning and development, in particular, to consult with Keweenaw NHP museum, interpretation, or preservation staff in the early planning stages.
