Keweenaw National Historical Park Ranger-Led Summer Series Begins Today

Calumet Visitors Center exterior(Calumet, MI) On July 6, Keweenaw National Historical Park will begin offering regular ranger-led activities that will continue throughout the summer. There will be walking tours in both the Calumet Unit and the Quincy Unit, as well as several evening programs at Fort Wilkins Historic State Park.

Calumet Unit tours will be offered on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 2:00 pm, beginning July 6 and running through September 24. There will be a variety of tour themes this year, with tours exploring Calumet and Hecla Mining Company’s Industrial Core, investigating downtown Calumet’s past through ghost signs and missing buildings, and visiting existing and former churches. All Calumet tours will meet at the Calumet Visitor Center located at 98 Fifth Street in Calumet.

Quincy Unit tours will be offered on Thursdays at 2:00 pm, beginning July 7 and running through August 18. Tour topics will alternate weekly: one will delve into the history behind the surface ruins of the Quincy Mine, and the other will explore the fascinating geology of the site.

At Fort Wilkins, rangers will give several evening presentations in July and August. Presentations will start at 7:30 pm. On July 12 and August 9, the presentations will be on the Life of 19th Century U.S. Soldiers; on July 13 the presentation is titled Missing in the Copper Country, and on August 18 the presentation is titled Exploring with Technology.
