Kuopus Pleads Guilty

A Houghton County man scheduled to go to trial yesterday for his role in an April high-speed police chase has pleaded guilty instead. As part of his deal, 26-year-old Travis Kuopus admitted to third-degree fleeing and eluding police and attempted stalking. Three other charges, include aggravated stalking and obstructing, resisting or assaulting a police officer, were dropped. Police say Kuopus’s charges stem from a domestic incident at the Houghton Walmart store in April, after which he allegedly hit a vehicle and then fled the scene. The two-day chase led officers through Houghton on M-26 to Dollar Bay. Kuopus was eventually arrested at a house in Laurium. He now awaits his sentencing, which is scheduled for August 27th in Houghton County Circuit Court.
