Lawmakers Double Down on Opposition to DPS Bills as They're Introduced in the Senate

Some lawmakers in the Michigan House are doubling down on their opposition to a plan introduced in the Senate Thursday to help get Detroit Public Schools out of debt.

All signs point to money being taken out of the School Aid Fund to pay for the governor’s plan to fix DPS.

That’s a non-starter for State Representative Peter Pettalia, a northern Michigan Republican.

He says schools in his district are already getting the bare minimum from the state and can’t afford to get any less.

Democrats in both the House and Senate also came out against the plan Thursday, some of whom represent Detroit and the surrounding suburbs.

The governor’s plan would cost the state over $700 million.

He won’t officially announce a funding source until he gives his budget address next month.
