Lions Split at Cobber Classic – Thursday Sports Wrap

Lloyd

Finlandia University
The Finlandia University softball team earned a split in their opening day at the indoor Cobber Classic in St. Paul yesterday. In their first game, the Lions gave up six runs in the second inning, and lost 7-5 to Concordia-Moorhead. In the second contest, Finlandia scored 11 runs over the first three innings, and cruised past Bethany Lutheran 17-5. Makenna Lloyd had three hits, scored twice, and drove in four runs. The Lions continue play in St. Paul today, with games against Northland College this morning, and Bethany Lutheran this afternoon.

Athanasiou

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings lost to the Colorado Avalanche 3-1 last night. Andreas Athansiou scored Detroit’s only goal. Jimmy Howard made 26 saves in the loss. The Wings skate at Arizona tonight.

Baynes

NBA
The Detroit Pistons lost their second straight game, falling 97-83 to the Utah Jazz last night. With the starters all suffering from cold shooting, Ish Smith led Detroit with 16 points. Aaron Baynes scored 12, and grabbed 12 rebounds. The Pistons will host the Toronto Raptors tomorrow night.

Sanchez

MLB
Anibal Sanchez put his spring struggles behind him, and threw four perfect innings in the Detroit Tigers’ 8-6 victory over the Atlanta Braves yesterday. Sanchez entered the game in the third inning. He struck out five of the 12 batters he faced. Jordan Zimmermann started, but left with two outs in the first inning, after giving up four runs. Andrew Romine homered for Detroit. The Tigers will face the Braves again this afternoon.

The Colorado Rockies scored twice in the bottom of the ninth to edge the Milwaukee Brewers 5-4 yesterday. Chase Anderson made a strong start, giving up one run over four innings. The Brewers will face the Arizona Diamondbacks this afternoon.

NFL
The Detroit Lions have re-signed long snapper Don Muhlbach to a one-year contract. Next season will be Muhlbach’s 14th in Detroit.

NCAA
The field of 64 is set for the NCAA Division One men’s basketball tournament. USC and and UC-Davis earned berths with victories in the First Four last night. Coverage of the tournament continues today on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Old-Timers Tourney
The Copper Country Old-Timers Hockey Tournament begins today. Games for men’s and women’s teams in various age divisions will continue through Sunday at the Houghton County Arena, Dee Stadium, and the Calumet Colosseum. Link to the full schedule here.

Team Copper Country will play for a state hockey title this weekend in Port Huron. Coverage of their first game will begin tomorrow evening around 7:50 on KBear 102 and KBear102.com.
