31 Backpacks Prepares for Spring Break

With spring break for Copper Country students just over a week away, 31 Backpacks is gearing up for its annual effort to make sure kids don’t go hungry…

31 Backpacks is an organization that provides food and personal hygiene products for at-risk kids in Keweenaw, Houghton and Baraga Counties

That’s Melissa Maki, who says the organization now provides assistance to around 450 local students…

these are kids that are getting the free or reduced meals at school, but are at risk for going without on the weekends.

Students are referred to them by school officials, and food and supplies are distributed through the schools.

With no school breakfasts or lunches during spring break, 31 Backpacks needs to fill that gap…

My guess-timation is 936 kitchen-sized garbage bags full of food that we’ll be packing.

Maki admits that the group is sometimes accused of enabling lazy parents, but says most of the families they help are legitimately short of resources, and the focus needs to be on the kids…

They’re not capable of helping themselves. They can’t get a job, they can’t make a phone call and ask for help. They’re very vulnerable.

Volunteers are needed at Glad Tidings Church to help with the set-up Sunday at 2:00, the Big Pack Monday evening at 6:00, and bus loading Tuesday morning at 7:00.

Financial contributions to support the effort are appreciated, as well. Learn more about the Big Pack and how to contribute at their Facebook page.
