Aspirus Health Experts: Understand Your Risk On Diabetes Alert Day

LAURIUM, Mich.  One in three American adults is at risk for developing type 2 diabetes, a serious disease that can lead to complications like kidney failure, heart disease, stroke, blindness, and amputations. But type 2 diabetes doesn’t have to be permanent—it can be prevented or delayed with healthy lifestyle modifications. The first step is learning your risk.

In recognition of American Diabetes Association® Alert Day® on March 27, health experts at Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital and Clinics are encouraging people to take a simple and anonymous, one-minute test to find out if you are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes. During the test, you will answer questions such as, “Do you have a family history of diabetes,” and “Are you physically active?” to learn your diabetes risk in 60 seconds. The test is available online at www.diabetes.org/alertday.

A simple, 5-minute diabetes health risk assessment, as well as information about the disease, how to prevent it and how to fight back is available at aspirus.org/healthinfo.

“Share these resources with friends and family—with 84 million Americans at risk for developing type 2 diabetes, someone you love could be at risk,” said Deborah Gruver, Family Nurse Practitioner for Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital. “We hope you’ll join us by learning your type 2 diabetes risk this year for Alert Day, and help others do the same.”

Aspirus Keweenaw utilizes a multidisciplinary team approach in providing care for patients to help them manage diabetes and achieve the best possible quality of life. The clinic offers care and self-management, diabetes education, diabetes support group and a foot care clinic.
