Attorney General Nessel and Secretary Of State Benson Warn Of Petition Scams

Be careful when you sign a petition these days.

Attorney General Dana Nessel and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson have teamed up to make sure Michiganders are aware of petition scams, which mislead people into signing a petition they may not want to be on.

It’s been reported that circulators of a petition told people the petition was about one topic, but it was about another one.

AG Nessel said “Regardless of what your political stance is, I am urging anyone who is approached by a petitioner to carefully read and make every best effort to understand what you are agreeing to sign.”

Secretary of State Benson went on to add “The recent increase in complaints demonstrates it’s high time for the Legislature to act and make it a crime to intentionally mislead a voter into signing a petition.”
