Bicyclist Killed in Portage Township Crash

A Houghton man was killed in a car-bicycle crash in Portage Township Friday afternoon.

Houghton County Sheriff’s Deputies were called to the intersection of US-41 and the Nara Park Road around 2:20.

Their preliminary investigation indicates that a vehicle driven by 24-year-old Jordan LaTendresse of Marqueette was northbound. 69-year-old Roger Kieckhafer attempted to cross the highway in front of LaTendresse on his bicycle, and pulled out in front of LaTendresse. LaTendresse tried to avoid Kieckhafer, but was unable to. Keickhafer was pronounced dead at the scene.

Neither speed nor alcohol are believed to have been factors in the crash. An investigation continues.

Deputies were assisted by Houghton, Hancock and MTU police officers, along with first responders from MTU and Mercy Ambulance.
