Bottle And Can Returns Come Down To Executive Order

In case you’re wondering when you can return that ever growing mountain of bottles and cans in your garage, it all depends on when Governor Whitmer’s “Stay Home Stay Safe” Executive Order is lifted.

This according to Spencer Nevins, President of the Michigan Beer and Wine Wholesalers Association.

Returning bottles and cans was suspended, when the order went into effect on March 23rd.

Originally meant as a safety measure for employees, who handle returned bottles and cans, the orders have been extended several times, and are taking their toll on everyone involved, as consumers are still charged the $.10 deposit, but haven’t been able to return bottles in over two months.

The industry is suffering as well, as they have to use new aluminum for cans, as opposed to relying on being able to recycle used cans.

No one has exact figures on how much money is in the unreturned bottles and cans, but Nevins had this to say.

Nevins also said he continues to work with the Governor’s office and other retail associations, to come up with a plan that allows returns, while protecting everyone’s safety.

Governor Whitmer’s Current extension, is in effect until June 13th, but could be lifted or extended, before then.
